Region supports 50/ 50 Transit campaign and encourages community of faith engagement
The Regional Council Executive has signed on to a campaign calling on the Manitoba government to recommit to transit funding. They invite communities of faith to consider doing the same. Here’s the central campaign call: “The Province of Manitoba should restore the provincial 50–50 transit funding agreement with Manitoba municipalities by the end of 2026, to support better public transit operations and service”.
Reasons for the Executive endorsing this focused on community and common good, in keeping with our faith commitments. This included the reality that our neighbours need public transport: young people, seniors, people who are economically poor, people living at a distance from essential services, and people in northern and remote areas that often have no access to public transit at all.
Executive members also noted that the Earth needs this. Communal transportation is a key part of reducing ever-increasing carbon emissions related to private transportation. Earlier Regional Council decisions on supporting climate justice initiatives were also a reason mentioned.
