Here from the Beginning travelling exhibition highlights stories and contributions of Black people in the United Church of Canada

Here from the Beginning at Knox United Church in Calgary, at General Council 45 in August 2025.
Black people have played a significant role in the history of The United Church of Canada, but their stories have often gone untold. As we move through our 101st year, we invite you to join us in bringing these stories to life.
Here from the Beginning is a bilingual French and English physical exhibition and an online experience. The in-person exhibit is traveling across Western Canada throughout Fall 2026 and early 2027, hosted by United Churches in partnership with their communities and community groups.
It showcases the contributions and experiences of Black people within the church, amplifying voices that have long been overshadowed by the dominant narrative. Launched in Edmonton on Emancipation Day 2025, the United Church’s centennial year, the exhibition has now travelled across Eastern Canada, shining a light on the stories, experiences, and contributions of Black people within the church. It aims to bring forward voices that have not always been given the space they deserve.
We hope that looking at our church and Canadian history from the Black perspective will open us to a fuller understanding of the history of The United Church of Canada, and contribute to the journey of decolonization within the church and wider Canadian society. Here from the Beginning is a step in the church’s journey to be an intercultural and anti-racist church.
