September 18, as federal Parliament opens, Indigenous people and supporters are gathering on Parliament Hill, Algonquin lands, to call on the federal government to support a search of the landfill. In addition, people are gathering at the Manitoba legislature to push the provincial government. Please hold all who are gathered to witness in prayer, asking for compassion from our leaders and our whole society, and strength for loved ones who are advocating for basic decency in the midst of deep grief.
Our national church leaders joined this search call September 5, and continue to ask church members to push for a search, and to offer material support Camp Morgan (Brady Landfill) and Camp Marcedes (outside the national Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg).
You can use the action on the Prairie to Pine has posted, or use this updated action from Amnesty International Canada, which also recognizes that the government of Manitoba has an undeniable responsibility too, and asks us to keep up the provincial pressure.
At the church leaders’ listening gathering at Brady landfill, where 200 concerned Manitobans joined the circle, the need to pressure the province was noted, along with the need for all Manitobans to make this deep concern part of the election campaign. We were asked to ensure that loved ones are not left alone in their grief; and to add our voices to theirs.
At all candidates’ forums, in letters and social media posts, and at your front door, you can raise this concern for basic dignity, and also mention the 231 Calls to Justice in Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. This report gives us all many positive ways forward that would benefit our entire society. But action on it has been limited. Let’s do what we can to change that. #searchthelandfill
