SUMMARY:CCS Friday - An Ecology of Faith Formation
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centre for Christian Studies on Friday\, March 15 (noon Central\, 1pm Eastern\, 11am Mountain\, 10am Pacific\, 2pm Atlantic) for an online conversation about the eco-system of faith formation in congregations. Our special guest will be UCC Growth Animator Greg Smith-Young. \nWithin creation\, ecosystems form as different and diverse creatures (living and non-living) interact together. Each part plays a vital role in making the whole. Ecosystems are about interdependence and integration. What can happen when we bring an “ecosystem” way of thinking into the faith formation work of congregations? Join us as we imagine the possibilities. \nGreg Smith-Young (he/him) is a Growth Animator with the United Church of Canada. He serves alongside existing and newly-forming communities of faith in southwest Ontario\, helping them to share in what Jesus is already doing in their places: inviting\, welcoming\, engaging\, forming disciples\, and sending to share in God’s Presence. \nCCS Fridays are free. Please register to receive a zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwsceGsqzIuHtcJfObCM1xhPf4sRLMj18nC#/registration \nCCS Fridays are online conversations to help us all to respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts. These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. Each session will be on a Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 CT and in the form of a Zoom workshop. There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups.

SUMMARY:CCS Friday: Creating Harmonious Space
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, February 23 from 12:00 to 1:00 CST join an online conversation about creating “harmonious space” rather than “safe space”. Harmonious space is the condition in which diversity and inclusion truly grow. Guided by author and educator bell hooks\, who said\, “ Learning takes place in harmonious space” and “Community that allows for risk\, the risk of knowing someone outside your own boundaries is love.” We will consider harmony and risk as opposed to “safety” as the best environment suitable for diversity. \nOur special guest will be Deaconess Adrainne Gray. Adrainne was consecrated a Lutheran Diaconal Association (LDA) deaconess and ordained an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) deacon in 2017. She is currently the Director for Recruitment for the LDA with a focus on Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and works remotely from her home in Atlanta\, GA. \nCCS Fridays are free. SUMMARY:CCS Friday on Engaging Youth in Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, 15 youth from across the church participated in the United Church of Canada’s first ever Climate Motivators program. Each student was sponsored by\, and in partnership with\, a local community of faith where they worked together on local climate justice or environmental needs. \nThe motivators connected online and in-person to learn how to be leaders\, worship\, be in nature\, act for change\, and influence church policy. \nOur special guest will be Amy Crawford\, team leader for Faith Formation and Mission with the General Council of the United Church of Canada. Amy has just returned from a short sabbatical where she was reviewing and evaluating what happened to the youth and the people they interacted with. She will share some of her insights about getting youth involved in educating about climate change. \nCCS Fridays are free. Please register to receive a zoom link\, here: \nCCS Fridays are online conversations to help us respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts. These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups.

SUMMARY:Diakonia During Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join in on Friday\, October 27\, 2023 at noon Central Time for an online discussion of climate change and how to respond as faith-filled individuals and as ministers. \nThis past summer has delivered unprecedented and extreme weather phenomena to many parts of Canada and around the world. What are the implications of climate change to your community and context? Who are we within the community of creation\, and what is our responsibility to all life on Earth? What does climate change mean for the collective ministry of diakonia? \nOur special guests will be Eric Tusz-King and Katrina March. Eric is a “mostly-retired” Diaconal Minister in the United Church\, with experience in housing and energy issues\, who has served on the UCC’s Climate Advisory Committee and is still on the Climate Advisory Committee for the town of Tantramar\, NB\, where he currently lives. Katrina is a deaconess and environmental engineer who is a member of the Lutheran Diaconal Association. She is a writer\, speaker\, preacher\, teacher\, and advocate for a better way of living together within creation. She recently moved to Spokane\, Washington. \nCCS Fridays events are free. SUMMARY:Worship Workshop on “Humour and Resistance” with Cláudio Carvalhaes
DESCRIPTION:What do Worship and Play have to do with each other? Come find out at a 2-day continuing education event with Cláudio Carvalhaes offered by the Centre for Christian Studies. \nTo be able to laugh\, to have humour\, and to be foolish are all tremendous forms of resistance. We’ll explore different resources and strategies to make play a fundamental part of our daily spiritual lives and our communities. \nSo\, what are you waiting for? Join us for a lively workshop on Friday\, April 14 and Saturday\, April 15\, 2023. \nIt will be a fun-filled\, engaging\, and transformative time with Cláudio Carvalhaes\, Brazilian\, theologian\, professor\, liturgist and artist. SUMMARY:CCS Fridays: Getting rid of us and them in the church
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, with CCS’s new program staff\, Rev. Alcris Limongi\, we will briefly name the processes of exclusion\, marginalization\, and structural inequality that are often unexamined in the church—what we call othering—and seek actions that move towards a church of belonging where there is mutual power\, access\, and opportunity for all people who share the space. SUMMARY:CCS Friday – Becoming an Anti-Racist Church
DESCRIPTION:Join an online conversation to explore more about what it might mean to become an anti-racist church. How does an organization continue the process of institutional change to become a more intentionally anti-racist one? The conversation will be facilitated by Adele Halliday who is the Anti-Racism and Equity Lead staff at the United Church’s General Council Office. An experienced anti-racism educator\, workshop leader\, and award-winning writer\, Adele has been involved in anti-racism work with churches in Canada and beyond for many years. She is currently staff resource to the United Church’s Anti-Racism Common Table. She holds a Master of Education as well as a Master of Theological Studies degree\, and is currently studying towards a Doctor of Education. \nYou can register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEkcuihqzspHtTmzSydBr3p3D-HMsqeODZi \nCCS Friday conversations are free.
