SUMMARY:CCS Friday: Rapture or Renewal?
DESCRIPTION:CCS Fridays are online conversations to help us all to respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts. These workshops are hosted by the Centre for Christian Studies and open to anyone who might be interested. Each session will be in the form of a Zoom workshop with a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups. \nThe next CCS Friday is on November 18 at noon (Central). It will be a discussion of rapture and Matthew 24:36-44 (lectionary reading for the first Sunday in Advent\, in time for your worship preparation at the end of the month) with Canadian Mennonite University professor Dan Epp-Tiessen. \nThe event is free but you must register by clicking the link below: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0pc-mpqTotGdA7IuPcONaoDSd4i8kOj1iL

SUMMARY:Common Cup Farewell Concert
DESCRIPTION:Augustine United Church \n444 River Avenue \nFree Will Offering \nAll proceeds go to Augustine United Church \nMessage from Gordon Light\,\nWhen Ian Macdonald and Jim Uhrich started as a team ministry at Augustine in 1979\, I had been the priest at St Luke’s\, Anglican Church on Stradbrook for 2 years. I remember going over to introduce myself to them and discovering a common love for making music. We became close friends and continued that friendship through our various moves over the years. The friendship generated a partnership that became Common Cup which still exists. Bob Wallace (who came to be minister at St. Stephens’s Broadway during those early days) joined us. Bob and I are still members of the group\, which now includes Scott McDonald (another Anglican and our drummer from Edmonton)\, Richard Betts (UCC\, our bass player from Calgary) and Lloyd MacLean (UCC\, our pianist from Pictou County\, Nova Scotia.) On our Website – commoncup.com – there is a brief history of our group\, and a tribute to Jim and Ian. \nCommon Cup is now winding down. We are planning a few more concerts and thought it might be nice to finish by honoring our beginnings in Winnipeg.\nThis a concert to give thanks and remember Ian and Jim’s ministry from our earliest days in Winnipeg and in the years following.

DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, February 23 from 12:00 to 1:00 CST join an online conversation about creating “harmonious space” rather than “safe space”. Harmonious space is the condition in which diversity and inclusion truly grow. Guided by author and educator bell hooks\, who said\, “ Learning takes place in harmonious space” and “Community that allows for risk\, the risk of knowing someone outside your own boundaries is love.” We will consider harmony and risk as opposed to “safety” as the best environment suitable for diversity. \nOur special guest will be Deaconess Adrainne Gray. Adrainne was consecrated a Lutheran Diaconal Association (LDA) deaconess and ordained an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) deacon in 2017. She is currently the Director for Recruitment for the LDA with a focus on Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and works remotely from her home in Atlanta\, GA. \nCCS Fridays are free. Please register to receive a zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kcOCoqz8tGtf4EgB269gUXM_d-r_sSrqc#/registration \nCCS Fridays are online conversations to help us respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts. These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups.

SUMMARY:For the Earth - concert
DESCRIPTION:“For the Earth” November 22\, 7:00pm\, St. Andrew’s River Heights United Church\, 255 Oak Street\, Winnipeg \nHow can we be better stewards of this Earth? How can we move forward in hope that humanity can create a better future for our earth? How can we celebrate our home\, while also acknowledging the harm we have created? \nPlease join the St. Andrew’s River Heights Choir and Handbells at For the Earth\, a climate-themed concert on Friday\, November 22\, 7:00pm as we consider these questions through music and readings. The concert features the Western Canada premiere of Canadian composer Paul Aitken’s new work “Missa Pro Terra\,” a poignant re-imagining of the traditional mass setting for choir and soloists. Entry is by donation ($20 suggested)\, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to climate initiatives.

SUMMARY:Blue Christmas Service
DESCRIPTION:McClure United Church\,\n533 Greenwood Place\, Winnipeg \nWe hold a Blue Christmas Service to recognize that the world’s Christmas festivities can often seem superficial and trivial to those who have been experiencing loss and sorrow\, or who are struggling with trials in life. We believe that a service is needed that can get us beyond the tinsel and the froth\, one to which we can bring our losses and name them\, in which we can hear deeper words of hope than the world has to offer\, and through which we might bind ourselves more closely to the one from whom we have true tidings of comfort and joy – Emmanuel\, God with us. \nPlease join us all are welcome.
