SUMMARY:Where They Come From: A Meditation on Eleanor Rigby
DESCRIPTION:Where They Come From: A Meditation on Eleanor Rigby \nIn 1966\, Paul McCartney wrote a remarkable song—Eleanor Rigby. Over the ensuing decades\, fascination with Eleanor and Father McKenzie has only grown. Who were they? Why were they lonely? \nThis year\, Interesting Theatre will provide our answers with Where They Come From: A Meditation on Eleanor Rigby\, written and directed by Tim Higgins. \nAct One will feature the Haskins Street Band as they explore the musical influences that informed the Fab Four’s remarkable creativity and led them to Eleanor. \nIn Act Two\, the company of Interesting Theatre tackles the questions more directly. The story is set in Winnipeg\, in the winter of 1920. Supported by The Elleston Trio\, you’ll watch two lives become intertwined in ways that neither could have imagined. \nWhere They Come From: A Meditation on Eleanor Rigby will be staged in the Sanctuary of Young United Church\, 222 Furby Street\, on Friday and Saturday\, April 1st and 2nd. Curtain is 7:30 both nights. Tickets are $20 (plus agency fees) and are available on EventBrite. Proof of vaccination and wearing of mask will be required. Running time approx. two hours. \nHere is the link: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/where-they-come-from-a-meditation-on-eleanor-rigby-tickets-277074095077 \nUniversal questions. Unforgettable characters. Amazing music. Join us for Where They Come From: A Meditation on Eleanor Rigby. All proceeds go to the work of Young United Church in the West Broadway neighbourhood. SUMMARY:Candles for COP27: Vigil for Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:KNOX UNITED CHURCH\, BRANDON\nVIGIL FOR CLIMATE CHANGE \nKAIROS/ FOR THE LOVE OF CREATION / \nJoin us in-person or live stream.\nFrom November 6th-18th of this year\, world leaders will gather at the COP27 conference in Egypt to discuss their plans to address global heating. Despite increasingly clear evidence of the climate emergency\, leaders across the world and particularly in Canada are failing to take the decisive action needed to protect our world\, and particularly the most vulnerable members of the global community. Canada has yet to reduce our national emissions\, our government continues to approve and subsidize new fossil fuel infrastructure\, and we are falling behind in our commitments to fund energy transitions in less developed countries. This cannot continue.\nIn recognition of the need for change\, Knox United Church in Brandon with the help of the Outreach Committee and the Green Team is going to hold a Candlelight Vigil for Climate Change. This will be a time to reflect and share our love for our planet\, our concern for ourselves and our fellow human beings at risk from climate change\, and our hopes for truly transformative action to happen at COP27 and through each other. We will share brief messages from delegates attending COP27 from Canada and the Global South.\nSo join us on Sunday\, November 13 from 6-7pm at Knox United Church or through the livestream at: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheKnoxKonnexion

SUMMARY:Inner Peace\, Earth Peace: Buddhist Christian Spiritual Practices
DESCRIPTION:How do we find inner peace? How can we bring peace to others\, to our earth and to our world? How can we spiritually sustain our justice ministry? \nSensei Tanis Moore and Sensei Frederick Ulrich from the Manitoba Buddhist Temple\, along with Loraine MacKenzie Shepherd\, will lead our fall study for this year\, as we explore these topics through the teachings of Buddhism and of Christian mystics. We will also be learning spiritual practices which we can incorporate into our personal spiritual disciplines. \nAs a jumping off place\, we will refer to Thich Nhat Hanh’s Living Buddha\, Living Christ. McNally Robinson needs two weeks to bring this in\, should you like to read it\, but it is not required. \nWe will meet in person in the parlour  at Westworth United Church for the four Monday nights of November\, beginning at 7:30 pm. Masks are strongly recommended. Please let Loraine know if you are interested in attending some or all of the sessions: westworthminister@gmail.com

SUMMARY:CCS Friday: Rapture or Renewal?
DESCRIPTION:CCS Fridays are online conversations to help us all to respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts. These workshops are hosted by the Centre for Christian Studies and open to anyone who might be interested. Each session will be in the form of a Zoom workshop with a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups. \nThe next CCS Friday is on November 18 at noon (Central). It will be a discussion of rapture and Matthew 24:36-44 (lectionary reading for the first Sunday in Advent\, in time for your worship preparation at the end of the month) with Canadian Mennonite University professor Dan Epp-Tiessen. \nThe event is free but you must register by clicking the link below: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0pc-mpqTotGdA7IuPcONaoDSd4i8kOj1iL

Donations gratefully accepted.
