SUMMARY:Mural Unveiling Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Please join us this Sunday\, May 28th at 4pm at Harrow United Church\, 955 Mulvey Avenue to celebrate the official unveiling of a beautiful new mural that can be seen as people drive or walk down Harrow Street.  If it looks like rain\, bring a raincoat!  We can retreat inside for parts of the celebration if needed\, but we will stay outside\, if at all possible\, because we can’t bring the mural in! \nMural Project Background \n \nIn 2021\, a group of youth\, on behalf of our region’s Young Adult and Youth (YAAY) Committee received a $10\,000 Winnipeg Foundation Walking Together Grant.  One of their projects from the grant moneys was to work with an Indigenous artist to put a mural on a United Church.  YAAY’s grant team partnered with artist Jeannie Whitebird\, of Rolling River First Nation and her colleague\, Charlie Johnston\, an experienced mural artist\, as well as the reconciliation team from Harrow United Church. Harrow United is excited to be the recipient of this mural\, and welcomes you all to join them at 4pm on Sunday\, May 28th for conversation and bannock in their healing garden with formal program to follow at 4:30 to celebrate the official mural presentation. \nClick here to see more photos and description of the project. \nWe hope to see you Sunday!

The conversation will be facilitated by Adele Halliday who is the Anti-Racism and Equity Lead staff at the United Church’s General Council Office. An experienced anti-racism educator\, workshop leader\, and award-winning writer\, Adele has been involved in anti-racism work with churches in Canada and beyond for many years. She is currently staff resource to the United Church’s Anti-Racism Common Table. Sometimes\, icebergs that look far away from each other on the surface can bump into each other under the water – sometimes gently\, sometimes causing damage. \nFor our coffee and chai conversation this month\, we are going to explore the cultural iceberg that we call the clergy collar.  On the surface\, it might seem like a small thing\, a symbol of office that some clergy intentionally wear and others do not.  Some church members and people in the general public are comforted by it\, others are puzzled by it\, others are traumatized by it.  Some clergy are comfortable wearing it\, and others are not.  All of our responses to this visible symbol of office are informed by our values\, our histories\, our stories\, our power in society – those often unseen things that exist beneath the water lines of our lives.  Let’s get together for meaningful conversation\, and explore who we are as an intercultural community\, through the lens of the cultural iceberg we call the clergy collar.
